About us

NorthGene™ provides quick, accurate and confidential DNA Relationship and Sexual Health Testing services to thousands of people all over the UK.

We believe in accessible and affordable testing for everyone. Our convenient service allows you to provide your sample in the privacy of your own home and receive your result within days.

We also offer a range of Government accredited DNA testing services to support legal and immigration cases, drug and alcohol testing and cell line authentication services.

History

NorthGene™ was founded in 1994 with a vision make genetic and health testing accessible to everyone.

Paternity testing for the Courts was first introduced in 1970.

Subsequently, the Human Genetics Commission created a subgroup on paternity testing which gave rise to the Code of Conduct and the recognition of service by the Lord Chancellor’s office. This legislated that all legal and immigration tests must be conducted by a Ministry of Justice accredited laboratory, such as NorthGene™, and in accordance with strict chain of custody requirements.

We also offer peace of mind testing. Although the results from this type of test are completely accurate, they cannot be used for any legal purpose. It is, therefore, important to think about the type of test you require as, should you need the result for any legal reason in the future such as a change to a child’s birth certificate, the testing process will have to be done again as a legal case. If you are unsure which type of test you require, please contact our Customer Services Team

In 2021, NorthGene™ was acquired by Biofortuna Limited and now operates from large, custom built, ISO 17025 accredited laboratories based in Deeside, North Wales. As well as the providing access to the latest cutting-edge equipment and facilities, the move also increased the headcount of both the laboratory and customer services teams, improving turnaround times and allowing expansion into other direct to consumer testing services such as sexual health.

At NorthGene™ we pride ourselves on offering a friendly, efficient and fully confidential service and we are dedicated to supporting our clients through what we understand can be a very difficult and emotional process.

Responsible and ethical testing

NorthGene™ takes the responsibility of offering a relationship testing service very seriously.

In compliance with the Human Tissue Act 2004 no DNA test will be carried out without the consent of each person involved or, in the case of a child, the consent of someone with Parental Responsibility.

In most cases the person with parental responsibility is the mother, NorthGene™ do not carry out DNA tests without the consent of the mother unless the father has Parental Responsibility. The most common ways in which a father may have Parental Responsibility is if he is named on the birth certificate of the child born after 1st December 2003 or he was married to the mother of the child at the time of birth. A Parental Responsibility order can also be obtained from the courts.
