Can twins have different fathers?

Most people assume that twins share the same biological mother and father and in almost every case, that is true. But in extremely rare situations twins can have different biological fathers. This is known as heteropaternal superfecundation and occurs when two separate eggs are fertilised by sperm from different men during the same ovulation cycle. Although uncommon, it is scientifically possible and can be confirmed through DNA relationship testing.

Types of twins

To understand how twins can have different fathers, it is important to understand the different types of twins:

  • Identical twins: occur when one egg is fertilised by one sperm and this then splits into two embryos. Both babies come from the same egg and sperm combination, so identical twins share identical DNA and therefore cannot have different biological fathers.
  • Non-identical twins: occur when two separate eggs are released by a woman during ovulation and each egg is fertilised individually. These twins are genetically similar to regular siblings because they do not share identical DNA. It is possible for each egg to be fertilised by sperm from different men.

How can twins have different fathers?

Twins can have different fathers if:

  • A woman releases multiple eggs during a single ovulation cycle
  • She has intercourse with different partners in close succession
  • Each egg is fertilised by sperm from different men

Although ovulation occurs within a 12-24 hour period, sperm can survive for up to 5 days in the body. This means fertilisation from separate partners can occur during the same cycle, resulting in non-identical twins who share the same biological mother but have different fathers, making them only half-siblings biologically.

How rare is it?

Cases of twins with different fathers are extremely rare. In fact, only a limited number of confirmed cases have been publicly documented, although experts believe it may occur more often than reported because paternity testing is not routinely performed in twin pregnancies.

In most cases, families are unaware that this has occurred without DNA relationship testing due to doubts about the fatherhood of one or both twins. This may happen during:

  • Paternity disputes or family law proceedings, such as child maintenance cases
  • Ancestry DNA testing taken for heritage purposes
