Can you do a paternity test while pregnant? This is one of the most common questions we hear from families navigating uncertainty before their baby arrives.
A prenatal paternity test is a DNA test designed to confirm the biological father of a child before birth. While the idea of testing during pregnancy might seem daunting, it has become significantly more accessible and safer in recent years.
As our Business Manager, Charlotte Haskayne, notes in our recent video, when many people think of prenatal paternity testing, their minds often jump straight to Bridget Jones’s Baby and the invasive method suggested to her. That process, known as amniocentesis, involves using a long needle to collect amniotic fluid directly from the womb. Because it is an invasive procedure, it does carry a small risk of miscarriage.
The good news?
Bridget – and the families we work with – didn’t need to rely on high-risk procedures to get answers. Modern science now allows us to determine paternity much earlier, without the need for invasive methods.
Non-invasive prenatal paternity testing
At NorthGene™, we have introduced non-invasive prenatal paternity testing to our DNA relationship testing services.
Unlike amniocentesis, which requires a sample of amniotic fluid, this is a safe, simple procedure that involves a routine blood draw from the mother. During pregnancy, a small amount of the baby’s DNA (cell-free foetal DNA) naturally circulates in the mother’s bloodstream. Our laboratories can isolate this DNA to compare it with a sample from the potential father. The process is 100% safe as it doesn’t intrude on the baby’s environment.
What is required from the father?
To complete the test, we need a DNA sample from the potential father. This is collected through a simple buccal (cheek swab). We offer flexible collection options:
- Together: Samples can be taken at the same appointment.
- Separately: If you are no longer in a relationship or live in different locations, we can coordinate separate collection appointments through our UK-wide sample collection network.
- At your convenience: Sample collection is completed in the comfort of your own home with our independent sample collectors or at a location of your choice, such as with your GP or a private clinic.
To complete the test, we also collect a cheek swab from the mother. By collecting this sample, we can remove her DNA from that of the child’s and focus only on the DNA inherited from the father. This allows us to obtain results with an accuracy rate of 99.999% in our analysis.
When can you do a paternity test while pregnant?
At NorthGene™, testing is available from as early as eight weeks of pregnancy.
This early timeframe is important for families who need clarity for legal, financial or personal reasons. It allows you to confirm paternity safely and accurately, giving you peace of mind well before your baby arrives, so you can plan your future with confidence.
We recommend testing from eight weeks because, at this stage, there is typically enough cell-free foetal DNA circulating in the mother’s bloodstream to provide reliable results. Testing earlier may lead to an inconclusive outcome, which could require repeat testing and extend uncertainty. By setting this standard, we aim to give you clear, definitive answers the first time.
