Immigration DNA Testing FAQs

General

What is immigration DNA testing?

Immigration DNA testing is used to confirm a biological family relationship, such as between a parent and child or siblings. It can be used to support UK visa, passport, nationality and family reunion applications where additional evidence of a relationship is needed.

How does DNA testing support immigration?

DNA testing can provide valuable evidence of a biological relationship when official documents are missing, incomplete or have been questioned.

It is commonly used to support applications involving parents, children and other family members, helping provide additional evidence for UK visa, passport, nationality and family reunion applications.

Can immigration ask for a DNA test?

Yes. In some cases, UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) may suggest DNA testing if further evidence is needed to confirm a biological relationship.

However, DNA testing is voluntary, and you cannot be forced to complete a test – it is used as supporting evidence rather than replacing official documents. If requested, it should be carried out by an accredited laboratory using the appropriate identity verification and chain of custody procedures as outlined by the Home Office.

Is DNA evidence accepted by UK immigration authorities?

Yes. DNA evidence can be used to support certain UK immigration applications where a biological relationship needs to be demonstrated.

To ensure your results are suitable for submission, testing should be carried out by an accredited laboratory, like NorthGene™, using the appropriate identity verification and chain of custody procedures.

The Process

Where can I get an immigration DNA test?

We offer immigration DNA sample collection throughout the UK, with appointments available at your home, workplace, GP surgery, solicitor’s office or another convenient location.

Can DNA testing be done overseas?

Yes. If a family member is outside the UK, we’ll send a sample collection kit directly to a doctor or medical professional. We also have our own international network of sample collectors who will be able to support you throughout the process.

Once the samples have been collected, the doctor will notify our team via email to northgene@biofortuna.com, and we’ll arrange for the kit to be securely returned to our laboratory for testing.

Do I have to wait until my family overseas has their samples collected before I can have mine collected in the UK?

No. You can provide your sample in the UK as soon as you’re ready.

Testing will begin once all samples have been received by our laboratory. However, you do not need to wait for your family member’s appointment before having your own sample collected. To avoid DNA degradation, we test all samples upon arrival and store the resulting DNA profile until the remaining samples are received for reporting.

What documents/ID do I need for an immigration DNA test?

For an immigration DNA test, you’ll need to provide a valid form of photographic ID, such as a passport or driving licence, so that your identity can be verified.

You’ll also need two passport-sized photographs for the sample collector to sign and confirm that they are a true likeness to you. If you don’t have any available, your sample collector can take a photograph during your appointment instead.

Timing and results

How long does an immigration DNA test take?

Your appointment usually takes around 10 minutes, including identity verification and sample collection.

If you’re testing within the UK, one of our independent sample collectors will contact you within 24 hours of registering your case to arrange a convenient appointment.

If samples are being collected overseas, transit times will depend on international couriers and customs. However, kits are typically delivered within 3-5 working days of being dispatched from our laboratory. Our dedicated logistics team ensures the fastest possible delivery, and tracking details will be provided to you.

Once all participants’ samples have been received, results are issued the next working day.

Are results sent directly to the Home Office?

Yes, if you’ve requested this on your Registration Form. During registration, you’ll be asked where you’d like your DNA test report to be sent. If you’ve instructed us to send the results directly to the Home Office or UK Visas and Immigration, we’ll do so securely on your behalf.

Many customers choose this option as it can help streamline their application and ensure the results are sent directly to the relevant department.

Costings

How much does immigration DNA testing cost?

Immigration DNA testing starts from £325 for two participants.

The final cost depends on the number of people being tested and whether any samples need to be collected overseas, where international courier charges may apply.
