Monkey Business at NorthGene™

We pride ourselves on being flexible and helpful here at NorthGene™, so when we received a call from a wildlife park asking us to undertake an orangutan paternity test we jumped at the chance!

Regular viewers of the popular TV show “Monkey Life” will be aware that female orangutan Awan has recently left Monkey World in Dorset to pair with Jin at Wingham Wildlife Park, but not before taking a DNA test to confirm they were unrelated as they were both conceived at the Dorset park.

Charlotte Haskayne, NorthGene™ Business Manager explains: “The park wanted to be sure there wasn’t a common parent as the intention was for Awan and Jin to pair.

We knew that orangutans and humans share 97% of the same DNA so we were confident we would get some markers but we couldn’t be certain we would get enough for a conclusive result as we have never tested primates before.

Thankfully we did and we were able to confirm that Awan and Jin do not share the same father. It’s really exciting to get a conclusive result, especially as it means Gin can now go and live with Awan and hopefully mate at some point in the future. We’re used to giving people the information they need to make life-changing decisions but now we have two orangutans starting a new life together as a result of our work!”

You can keep up to date with all the comings and goings at Monkey World on Sunday evenings on Sky Nature.
