We speak to people every day who have so many questions about paternity testing, whether that’s just how accurate the process is or how it actually works.

So today, I’ve sat down with Charlotte, our Business Manager, to answer some of the most common questions we hear. So let’s start with the one we probably hear the most…

Just how accurate is paternity testing?

That definitely is the question we are asked most here at NorthGene™, but when you do a peace of mind DNA test with an accredited laboratory like NorthGene™, the results we issue are greater than 99.999% accurate.

Basically, we compare DNA from each person across multiple genetic markers, and this allows us to determine whether they are biologically related with an extremely high level of confidence.

That’s reassuring to hear. Another thing that surprises people is that although the mother’s sample isn’t always required, we still recommend including her where possible. Now, can you tell us why that is?

For a paternity test, we only need samples from the child and from the potential father. However, including the mother’s DNA helps us remove the DNA the child has inherited from the mum, and it makes the analysis simpler and gives us the best possible chance of reaching a clear and conclusive result.

That’s why we always recommend including mother’s sample if it’s available.

Now, what happens if the potential father isn’t available to take part?

That’s actually more common than people realise.

Depending on the circumstances, we may still be able to investigate the biological relationship using DNA from close relatives, such as grandparents, the potential father’s brothers or sisters, or children who are confirmed to be the potential father’s biological children.

We can discuss the family’s situation first, so then we can recommend the most appropriate test.

We also hear from a lot of people who want to know whether it’s possible to have a paternity test before their baby is born. Is that possible?

Yes. We offer non-invasive prenatal paternity testing, which uses a simple blood sample from the mother and a cheek swab from the potential father and from the mother as well. It is completely safe for both the mother and for the unborn child, and it can be carried out from any pregnancy – from up to eight weeks.

And finally, once someone has sent their samples back to NorthGene™, how long will they be waiting for their results?

Once samples arrive at our UK-based laboratory, most peace of mind paternity test results are available via email within one to two working days.

We keep you updated throughout the whole process, and if you ever have any questions at any stage, our Customer Service team is always here to help you.

Thank you. That’s been really helpful. I think the key message is that every family situation is different, so if you’re unsure which test is right for you, it’s always worth getting in touch and asking the question.

Exactly. Whether you’re looking for peace of mind or need DNA testing for legal purposes or simply aren’t sure which test is right for you, we’re here to help guide you through the options and answer any questions you have.

We hope that’s answered some of the questions you have about paternity testing.
