HIV is often a subject clouded by taboo and stigmatised, but it shouldn’t be. Taking control of your sexual health is a proactive, responsible choice for your overall well-being, and HIV testing is an essential part of this. Comprehensive sexual health shouldn’t be guesswork, which is why NorthGene™ has added this critical service to our Enhanced STI testing kit.
This addition allows us to provide a more comprehensive picture of your sexual health. It all starts with understanding the facts and making testing a regular part of your health routine.
What is HIV?
HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) is a virus that attacks the body’s immune system. While it is a sexually transmitted infection, it is most confused with AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome).
The distinction is important: HIV is the virus, while AIDS is the most advanced stage of the infection. When left untreated, HIV can weaken the immune system to the point where a person is more vulnerable and susceptible to other infections or serious illnesses. However, it is important to understand that if you are diagnosed with HIV, it is not a life sentence. It is a completely manageable condition, and with modern medical advancements, early detection and treatment, many people living with HIV live full, healthy lives.
Understanding the STI
HIV is primarily transmitted through sexual contact where bodily fluids (such as blood, semen, or vaginal fluids) enter the bloodstream.
Symptoms of the STI typically start to show after a period of 2-6 weeks, resembling a flu like illness such as a fever, sore throat, fatigue, skin rash, headaches and swollen glands. However, HIV can also be asymptomatic, which highlights the importance of regular testing, as the only way to know for sure if you have or have not picked up the infection.
It is important to carry out preventative measures when engaging in sexual activity, for example, using barrier methods such as condoms.
How it works with NorthGene™
Testing with NorthGene™ is a discreet, simple process that fits into your schedule. When ordering your Enhanced STI Kit, simply opt-in for HIV testing when prompted. We will despatch your blood collection materials alongside your test for chlamydia, gonorrhoea, mycoplasma and trichomoniasis. Every NorthGene™ kit is sent in discreet, plain packaging with no mention of “STI” or “HIV” on the outside, ensuring your privacy throughout.
Once the kit arrives, you’ll find everything you need inside:
- Clear, step-by-step instructions
- A blood sample card
- Alcohol wipes
- Two sterile lancets for collection
To complete the HIV test, it only takes a couple of minutes:
- Prepare: Wash your hands and unpack the kit on a clean surface. Open the sample card so that the collection circles are exposed.
- The finger prick: Choose a finger (not a thumb) and clean it with the alcohol wipe. Unscrew and discard the blue tip of the lancet and press it firmly against the side of your fingertip until it clicks (it is best to stand up, relax and keep your hand below waist level to encourage blood flow). Make sure to wipe away the first drop of blood with a tissue.
- Collect the sample: Gently squeeze your finger at the puncture site to form drops of blood and apply to the sample card circles, aiming to fill at least 2 circles. If the blood flow stops, repeat the process with the second lancet on a different finger.
- Dry and return: Apply a plaster if needed and put the lancets and any bloody tissue into the biohazard bag. Allow the sample card to dry for at least 30 minutes before placing into the prepaid return box with the completed form and biohazard bag. Pop it any post box to return to our Deeside-based laboratory.
- Results: You’ll receive your secure results within one working day of the sample arriving for testing and analysis.
Note: NorthGene™ only provides a testing service and is unable to advise on next steps. If your test result is positive for HIV, it is important to seek medical advice from your GP or a specialist who will guide you through confirmatory testing, treatment and ongoing care.
