How accurate is a prenatal DNA test?

by | Apr 29, 2026 | Prenatal

When you are making a decision that affects your family’s future, you want clarity you can trust. You need absolute certainty. At NorthGene™, we understand that the two most important factors for any expectant mother considering a DNA test are safety and accuracy, so how do we ensure both?

Is it safe for my baby?

DNA testing has advanced significantly over the years. Since its introduction into clinical practice in 2011, non-invasive prenatal paternity testing has transformed how paternity testing can be carried out during pregnancy.

In the past, paternity testing during pregnancy required a needle to enter the womb (a process called amniocentesis). Today, our process is 100% non-invasive:

  • We only require a simple blood sample from the mother, as well as a simple cheek swab.
  • Because the test is non-invasive, it does not involve procedures that disturb the womb or amniotic sac.

How can a blood test be 99.999% accurate?

During pregnancy, the baby’s DNA – known as cell-free foetal DNA – enters the mother’s bloodstream. From eight weeks of pregnancy, there is usually enough cell-free foetal DNA in the mother’s bloodstream for analysis – our expert team can isolate it from the mother’s DNA using her cheek swab.

This allows us to compare the baby’s genetic markers against both the mother’s profile and the potential father’s, allowing us to confirm or disprove paternity with an accuracy rate of 99.999% or higher.

Why do we test from eight weeks?

We recommend that a prenatal paternity test be completed only after the 8th week of pregnancy to ensure accuracy. If we test too early, the percentage of the baby’s DNA within the mother’s blood might be too low, leading to an inconclusive result and prolonging uncertainty by requiring retesting later on during the pregnancy.

Waiting until at least week eight increases the likelihood of a clear and conclusive result, so you can move forward with greater confidence and certainty.

The importance of accreditation

Accuracy isn’t just about the science – it’s about the standards upheld at every stage of the process. This is where NorthGene™ stands apart.

We are one of only two laboratories in the UK that are UKAS accredited specifically for non-invasive prenatal paternity testing. This accreditation (ISO 17025), combined with our Ministry of Justice approval means our processes have been independently assessed for scientific rigour, consistency and compliance, ensuring our results are not only highly accurate, but also suitable for both peace of mind and legal purposes.

For you, this means:

  • Greater confidence in your results and the process behind them
  • A secure chain of custody recognised by the UK family court system
  • Reassurance that your test is handled with the highest standards of care, confidentiality and reliability
  • Results that can be used for legal purposes

Our scientists are specialists in complex relationship testing and are here to support you throughout. Whether you have questions about the process, your results or simply need reassurance, our team is here to help.

Understanding your results

One of the most intimidating parts of any DNA testing is waiting for the result and understanding what it means.

At NorthGene™, our team is committed to delivering your results as quickly as possible and issuing reports via email within 5-7 working days of samples arriving at our laboratory. Reports are designed to be clear and conclusive. You will typically see one of two outcomes:

  • Inclusion of Paternity (99.99% or higher): This means the DNA markers found in the baby’s sample are consistent with those of the potential father.
  • Exclusion of Paternity (0%): This means the DNA markers do not match, and the potential father cannot be the biological parent of the child.

You can read more about understanding your results here, but if you have any questions, don’t hesitate to get in touch – we’re more than happy to help!

Peace of mind starts here

Choosing to take a prenatal paternity test is a significant decision and can come with a range of emotions. That’s why our process is designed to alleviate stress and make everything as straightforward as possible.

By working with a UK-based, highly accredited laboratory, you can be confident that your results are handled with the care, accuracy and professionalism they deserve.

If you have any questions about the safety of our process or the science behind our test, our team is here to help. Alternatively, you can go ahead and order your test today.
