National Women’s Health Week

by | May 12, 2025 | STI Testing

This year, National Women’s Health Week is taking place between May 12th and 18th. The goal of the week is to empower women to make their health a priority, from regular checkups and mental health support to nutrition and exercise. However, there is one aspect that doesn’t often get enough open conversation: sexual health.

At NorthGeneTM we believe that sexual health is an important part of our overall health and this week is the perfect time to talk about why.

What is Sexual Health?

Sexual health is often reduced to preventing pregnancy, and while this is a crucial aspect, sexual health is about so much more. It’s about your emotional, physical, mental and social wellbeing. The World Health Organisation (WHO) expands on this, stating that sexual heath requires a positive and respectful approach to sexuality and sexual relationships, paving the way for pleasurable and safe experiences. That means feeling:

  • safe in your relationships,
  • respected in your choices,
  • informed and confident in your body and
  • supported by accessible health tools.

Unfortunately, despite its importance, many women delay prioritising their sexual health due to the stigma surrounding it, a lack of education or limited access to services. In some cases, the topic is an uncomfortable one, while for others, responsibilities such as work and family, take priority and sexual health ends up on the backburner.

There’s also a common misconception that if you feel fine, you must be fine. But many sexually transmitted infections (STIs) don’t show symptoms right away, or at all. This means that you could be unaware that anything is wrong and this can lead to complications later down the road if left untreated. Luckily, one simple way to support your sexual wellbeing and feel more confident and informed is through regular STI testing.

Why STI Testing Matters

Regular STI testing isn’t just about detection, but knowing your body, protecting your health, and empowering you to make informed decisions.

STIs are much more common than people realise and they can affect anyone, regardless of background, age or relationship status. Furthermore, many STIs don’t typically manifest symptoms in the early stages, but they can lead to serious issues, for example, at least 70% of women with chlamydia don’t notice symptoms, but if left untreated it can lead to long-term pelvic pain and infertility.

Therefore, the importance of regular testing cannot be overstated, helping you to:

  • catch infections early,
  • get fast, effective treatment
  • protect your partners,
  • reduce the stigma around testing and
  • feel in control of your health.

Knowing your status means caring for your health and protecting your peace of mind. What’s more, STI testing can be simple, discrete and stress-free, especially with NorthGeneTM’s at-home testing kits.
