Hi, I’m Charlotte, the Business Manager of NorthGene™, and today we’re going to be talking about something which can be quite emotional and overwhelming at times, which is non-invasive prenatal paternity testing.
We are now one of the two accredited laboratories in the UK who can offer non-invasive prenatal paternity testing, and we’re here today to answer the most common questions that our customers ask us, from how are the samples taken, through to how your results will look when they’re issued to you
What is a non-invasive prenatal paternity test?
A non-invasive prenatal paternity test is a simple DNA test that can be done from eight weeks into a woman’s pregnancy and can be used to determine the biological paternity of the unborn child. It’s completely safe for the unborn child and completely safe for the mother as well.
Why do people choose to have a prenatal paternity test done?
People may choose to have a prenatal paternity test for their own peace of mind and reassurance. Others may choose to have one for custody reasons once the child’s born. Whatever the reason for your prenatal paternity test, there’s no judgment here at all. We’re just here to get you an accurate result.
What samples are taken for the test?
For our test, we need a small blood sample from mum, a buccal swab from the mother as well, as well as a buccal swab from the potential father.
We offer this service as a home sample collection in which a nurse or medical practitioner will come to the home address, and they’ll take mother’s sample and the potential father’s sample as well. That way you’ve got full peace of mind that the samples have come from exactly who they should have come from.
How does the test work?
In a pregnant mother’s blood, there’s something called circulating cell-free DNA, and that contains the DNA of the unborn fetus. We can use the DNA swab that we got from the potential father and compare that against the circulating cell-free DNA of the unborn child.
By doing this, we can either eliminate that person as being the biological father, or we can prove that they are the biological father of the unborn child.
What can I expect at each stage?
Once you’ve placed your order with us on our website, one of our sample collectors will be in contact with you to arrange the sample collection at your earliest convenience. Once the samples have been taken, they’ll be returned to our UK-based laboratory, and you’ll be emailed to confirm safe receipt of these samples.
If throughout the time of us processing these samples, you have any questions or just want to talk to someone, you’re more than welcome to give us a call or drop us an email.
How are the results handled?
So when your samples are taken, you’ll be given a consent form to sign. On this form, it will have a section for what email addresses you’d like to receive the results to. No results will be shared to any other email addresses except the ones stated on the consent form.
Everything that we do is completely confidential, with your data and your DNA samples kept completely safe at our laboratory.
How quickly will I receive my results?
From receipt of all samples at our laboratory, your results will be issued within five to seven working days.
What will the results say?
For our prenatal paternity tests, we use a technology called next generation sequencing. This ensures that the results that we issue are greater than 99.999% accurate.
Once you receive your results, it’ll be one of two outcomes:
It will either confirm that the tested potential father is the biological father of the unborn child, or it will exclude that tested potential father as being the biological father of the unborn child.
On very rare occasion, we might not be able to give a conclusive result. Often, this is because mum is too early in her pregnancy, and we just need to retake the samples a little later on into her pregnancy, and hopefully, that will achieve a conclusive result.
How can someone get reassurance before testing?
We understand that the idea of a prenatal paternity test might be quite daunting. But rest assured, our DNA tests are 100% safe for the unborn child and for the mother.
But if at any point you have any questions at all or would like some additional reassurance, you’re more than welcome to give us a call or even drop us an email.
