Experiencing potential exposure to an STI can be worrying, and your first instinct is likely to get tested right away. However, getting tested too soon can lead to a false negative result, meaning the test says you’re negative when this isn’t the case, putting your health and wellbeing at risk, as well as any potential partners. This is where understanding the “window period” is crucial.
What is a window period?
An STI window period is the amount of time it takes for an infection to show up on a test after you’ve been exposed. During this time, the infection may be present in your body but not in high enough levels to detect it. Therefore, to ensure your test results are accurate and reliable, it is important to wait until the window period has passed.
Specific window periods for common STIs
The length of a window period varies depending on the specific STI. Below are the recommended periods for four of the most common infections, all of which we test for here at NorthGene™:
| STI | Window Period |
| Chlamydia | 2 Weeks |
| Gonorrhoea | 2 Weeks |
| Mycoplasma (Mgen) | 2-3 Weeks |
| Trichomoniasis (Trich) | 3-7 Days (but it can be up to a month) |
Can I get tested within the window period?
To ensure the accuracy of your results, we highly recommend waiting until the end of the window period to test. We know how tempting it is to get tested as soon as possible and understand that sometimes it’s not always feasible to abstain from sex completely for this time, so please be advised that testing during the window period can give you a false sense of security with a false negative result. If you do take a test during the window period, we strongly recommend completing a follow-up test once the full window period has passed to ensure result accuracy.
How often should I test for STIs?
Beyond testing after a potential exposure, regular STI testing is an essential part of self-care, protecting yourself and your partners. Many STIs do not present any symptoms, so you could be carrying an infection without knowing it.
We typically recommend testing:
- when starting a new relationship,
- if you’re thinking about removing other forms of protection, like condoms,
- every 3 months if you’re sexually active with multiple partners or
- yearly, even if you have one partner and have been monogamous.
Regular testing, combined with waiting for the window period to pass after a potential exposure, is the best way to stay on top of your sexual health and ensure your continued wellbeing.
