DNA evidence is a powerful tool in family law proceedings, whether they involve complex child custody battles or the Child Maintenance Service. In each of these cases, the evidence presented must be beyond reproach, conducted by an accredited DNA testing laboratory.
At NorthGene™, we understand that reliability is the foundation of trust and legally admissible results. Our accreditations are more than just formalities – they are the foundation of trust we provide to you, your solicitor and the courts, ensuring every result is indisputable.
Understanding Accreditation
For any DNA test to be legally admissible in the UK, the testing laboratory must adhere to the rigorous technical, ethical and procedural standards set by regulatory bodies. Accreditation provides reassurance and proof of this compliance.
Legal DNA testing must be conducted by laboratories accredited to ISO 17025 and approved by the Ministry of Justice. These certifications are essential because they are indicators of:
- Technical excellence – Ensuring consistency, accuracy and reliability throughout the testing and analysis process.
- Compliance and chain of custody – Adhering to the highest standards of data protection and privacy from start to finish. This complex process involves independent third-party sample collection to safeguard the samples and mitigate the risk of contamination, ensuring the validity of the results.
- Court admissibility – Reassurance that the results will be accepted as evidence within UK courts. Without these accreditations (for example, if a peace of mind DNA test were to be submitted) the results would be legally invalid, leading to unnecessary delays and stress.
NorthGene™ is UKAS 17025 accredited and Ministry of Justice approved. This commitment to excellence ensures that every result we issue is reliable, accurate and fully court admissible.
The Importance of a Chain of Custody
The most vital part in any legal DNA test is maintaining the chain of custody. This controls every step of the process, including sample collection, handling and transport to the laboratory for testing. It eliminates any risk of tampering, misidentification or procedural errors.
Our strict chain of custody ensures the integrity of your DNA samples through the following steps:
- Impartial collections – Performed by an independent third party, such as a professional collector dispatched by NorthGene™.
- Identity verification – Participants must provide photo identification, such as a passport or driver’s licence, for verification by the collector.
- The collector must also provide a photograph of the person they have taken the sample from and further certify that the photo is of true likeness of the person who provide the sample.
- Tamper-Proof Return – Samples are sealed immediately in tamper-proof packaging once collected for secure return to the NorthGene™ laboratory
- Confidential reporting – Results are issued exclusively to the authorised individuals listed on the registration form, typically the lead solicitor. This is done to maintain the highest level of data protection and confidentiality. Evidence of the identity verification is also issued along side the report, providing full evidence of Chain of Custody.
The meticulous process provides absolute confidence that the DNA evidence submitted is accurate, trustworthy and legally admissible for decisions in custody, inheritance or immigration cases.
Reliable Results on a Timeline
Accreditation doesn’t just ensure quality; it also helps to drive efficiency throughout the process. As a Ministry of Justice approved laboratory, NorthGene™ has established procedures, trained staff and quality control measures in place that enable us to deliver fast results without compromising on integrity whilst keeping pace with strict legal timelines.
Our process is designed for speed and clarity:
- Upon receiving your registration form, our sample collectors will contact all participants within one working day to arrange an appointment at their earliest convenience.
- Our dedicated team manages the entire process, from registration to reporting, ensuring all documentation is accurate to minimise delays.
- Once all samples are received at our UK-based laboratory, results are issued the next working day
The process is applicable to the full range of legal relationship tests available. NorthGene™ applies the same level of care and quality management to every case, including: paternity, non-invasive prenatal paternity, maternity, siblingship, grandparentage, and avuncular (aunt/uncle to niece/nephew) testing.
Confidence in Your DNA
Above all, accreditation is the safeguard for all parties in the case: the client, solicitor and the court.
Where results carry significant emotional, legal and financial implications, choosing an accredited tested provider is not just recommended – it is critical. Accreditation is the foundation of trust, certainty and integrity in your family law proceedings.
